Gemma was highly recommended by our host in Alba. Lets just say It must have been several (many) years since they partook in a meal at this hard to get to hilltop school dinner hall. The service was non existent, just plates set down in front of you. The quality of the food was so poor we walked out, I paid in full after 7 courses. 1st course. 3 slices of bland salami, 3 more of what tasted like luncheon meat. 2nd. Steak Tartare, raw finely blended steak, no seasoning, no salt, pepper or even olive oil. 3rd. Boiled Egg mayo (salad cream) with peas and finely chopped soggy carrots, it was just missing the bread to complete the sandwich. 4th. Spag Bol. They must have ran out of sauce, the parmasan was good. 5th. 4 slices of ham with hollandaise sauce. 6th Really tasty ravioli (out of Lidl) No accompaniments, just oil. 7th. Rabbit, apparently, brisket and butterd carrots, no potatoes.. Please do not waste the dreadful drive time, This place is living on a 5 year old wisper. Moral of the story... cook for yourself.
This is a beautiful osteria run by the wonderful Gemma, and it serves a traditional Piemonte set menu of things like beef tartare, rabbit, wild boar and local pasta dishes. Absolutely fantastic, but you should come prepared to eat a lot. The rooftop patio also has a 360-degree view of the hills and wineries and a great view of the Alps. Highly recommended!
It’s like eating at someone’s home. Elevated Italian home style cooking like your family. Delicious food, enormous portions…more than you could possibly eat, so pace yourself (I didn’t and had to give in after the second pasta course).
Wow
We were waitlisted and not sure if we’d make it and so happy we did on our last day in Piedmont. I first read about this restaurant in Barbara Boyle ‚s book Pinch me. I know Gemma was legendary but still blown away by the excellent food and great price too. Gemma walked by our table and greeted us too, she was so humble that I wish I asked for a selfie ! Make a reservation and go and be hungry enough to eat 3 appetizers and 2 pastas and a meat dish and 3 desserts! So authentic- love, love love
