The food in this restaurant is really really delicious. Some plates are not so big, but the quality and taste are divinal. Still, with 4 plates, 1 prosecco and 1 dessert, it was 66€ each, a very good price for a Michelin star. The view at the sunset is amazing. The attending were sweet, although I would appreciate a bit more attention to the drinks aspect. But nevertheless it was very good. On top of that, if they know you are sharing anything, they will make the division for you in different plates. Will be returning for sure
After two fantastic visits last year, we had been looking forward for months to returning to Il Sottomarino on May 16th, 2026. And somehow, against all logic, it was even better. Apparently mediocrity is treated there like a personal insult. Rare these days. The baccalà croquette was perfectly crispy on the outside and wonderfully creamy inside. Then came the catch of the day, filleted at the table and served with potatoes, olives, and cherry tomatoes. Pure simplicity, but executed exactly as it should be: outstanding fresh ingredients, perfect cooking, and no unnecessary circus on the plate. A refreshing change in a world where some chefs think foam and edible flowers automatically equal fine dining. And then dessert: the chocolate tower with zabaglione. Without exaggeration, the best zabaglione I have ever tasted. Silky smooth, perfectly balanced, and dangerously addictive. All accompanied by a delicious local Vermentino. Yummie. Friendly service, outstanding quality, and a kitchen that truly respects its ingredients. If you are in Follonica and skip this restaurant, you are actively making poor life decisions.
It was our final day in Tuscany and the food and vibes were really great. Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here
For appetizers, we ordered the scallops and quinoa cod nuggets. They were both bland and lukewarm when they arrived. Unfortunately, this was the best part of our dining experience. For entrees, I ordered the gnocchi with baby calamari, and my wife order the calamarata. After about 20-25 minutes the waitress brought us two big plates of fried seafood, that clearly wasn’t our order. When we tried to tell her this was not what we ordered, she shrugged her shoulders and walked away from us. After about 4-5 minutes, a different server came and hastily grabbed them off of our table and gave them to the couple sitting at the table right next to us (they were also not happy about the mixup). After about 10 more minutes my wife’s calamarata came to the table. It was cold and bland. We sat there confused for about 5 more minutes before my gnocchi arrived with zero explanation. Again, my pasta was also lukewarm and bland (we should have gotten up and left right there). The service treated us like we were somehow at fault for them not knowing where to deliver anybodies dishes, and even the owner was rude when we tried to tell her about our experience. Everything was so awful, that this is the first time I’ve ever written a review (good or bad) about a restaurant (it was THAT terrible) in my life. I have absolutely no idea how this place has a Michelin star. We’ve been in Follonica for about a week now, and dined at several other establishments in the same area. All of them have been good to great food, service, and environments. Do yourself a favor and avoid this overpriced, overhyped tourist trap. Literally all of the restaurants in the area are substantially better (and less costly). You couldn’t pay me to come back to Sottomarino.
The worst restaurant in Follonica. Service was terrible. The food was served cold and they brought us the wrong dishes at first. The wine was old and disgusting. They claim being a Michelin restaurant but this place is not worth it! Please get pizza instead if you’re hungry. THE WORST RESTAURANT IN FOLLONICA.
